What is Somatic Experiencing?

Somatic Experiencing is a body-based therapy

Somatic Experiencing brings attention to physical sensations in the body to address symptoms of trauma and PTSD, effects of highly stressful events, and other mental and physical health concerns. 

I define trauma as anything less than nurturing.

Talk therapy will often focus on thoughts, feelings, and emotions.  Somatic therapy combines talk therapy with a focus on how the body feels. Through this connection of mind and body, healing is possible.

SOMATIC HEALING CAN HELP TRAUMA, STRESS, and PTSD

The process of somatic therapy helps to increase awareness of the body itself, the mind body connection, and the links between the body and any trauma or stress experienced. This process relieves the symptoms of trauma, PTSD, or stress by working with the nervous system and may include breathing exercises, mindfulness practices, guided imagery, body movement. I incorporate different modalities of therapies I have learned in India, Thailand eastern medicine, and through my nursing background in western medicine. With my diverse background , I have been able to create healing from a variety of different healing trainings and lessons.

When trauma gets stuck in the body, it can impact the way we function in daily life and shift the way our nervous system operates. Somatic therapy can help us increase our awareness of our bodies and guide us in making connections between our physical sensations and our stress or trauma. 

sOMATIC TRUAMA THERAPY

After increasing our awareness of our bodies, mind body connection, and the links to our trauma or stress, we can now release the imprint that trauma has made on our body and nervous system. This imprint or pattern is a build up of stress responses, hormones, excess energy, and more. The process of somatic therapy helps us to discharge this imprint and reduce both mental and physical symptoms of trauma and stress.

Both our body and mind respond to traumatic or stressful events. This is our fight, flight, freeze and fawn response working to protect us from danger. But sometimes, traumatic memories can get stuck and even accumulate in the body, creating an imbalance of energy, and leading to symptoms of trauma and PTSD, even long after the danger has passed. 

Trauma is anything less than nurturing.

Olivia Johnston
Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, Holistic Nurse Coach, Registered Nurse, Certified Yoga Teacher

Olivia is a registered nurse, certified somatic practitioner, holistic health coach, complex trauma specialist, and licensed yoga teacher.

With 5 years of experience as a nurse treating acute mental health disorders, Olivia uses her diverse background of knowledge and experience across multiple wellness and psychiatric fields to help clients experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, addiction and more. While her experience in clinical mental health treatment is foundational in her work, she believes the most effective approach in achieving wellness is via holistic methods encompassing bodywork, somatic experiencing, yoga, breath work, and more. Olivia utilizes and integrates the Post Induction Treatment (PIT) Model developed by Pia Mellody as a foundational model to help others live a more embodied, aligned life.

Olivia is a Dallas native with a deep love of the arts, nature, and family. As a woman who has experienced and overcome trauma in her own life, Olivia now strives to help others do the same. Her relentless passion for improving the lives of others drives her to care deeply for each individual she helps heal.
